BENZALKONIUM CHLORIDE - IQB®.

A quaternary ammonium compound whose actions are similar to those of other cationic tensoactive. These tensoactives, in water solutions, dissociate in a small and inactive anion and in a relatively big and complex cation, which is responsible for the surface tension, provides certain detergent and emulsion proprieties and bacteriostatic and/or bactericidal action in the presence of Gram + bacteria, and in high concentrations, in the presence of some Gram – bacteria, as well. Quaternary ammonium compounds reach the peak of their efficacy in neutral or slightly alkaline solutions, while their effect in an acid environment is diminished; their activity is improved, in any circumstances, by the presence of alcohols, but organic matter significantly affects their effect in a negative way. They are relatively non-toxic compounds. They are incompatible with soaps, and other anionic tensoactives (common detergents), citrates, iodides, silver salts, tartrates, etc., even with some rubbers and plastics; they are also incompatible with aluminum, ferrous metals in general, hydrogen peroxide, etc.

Formula

It is a mixture of benzyldimethylalkylammonium chloride:[C6H5CH2N(CH3)2 R ]+ Cl – , where R is a mixture of alkys, including all or some of the group starting in n-C8H17 and to its superior homologous, such as n-C12H25, n-C14H29, y n-C16H33, being the latter those found in higher proportion.

Therapeutic Action:

Bacteriostatic and/or bactericide in the presence of Gram + bacteria, and in high concentrations, in the presence of some Gram – bacteria, as well. Some Pseudomonas spp. stumps are resistant, as well as some stumps of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Its efficacy has been proved in some virus and its antimycotic action is very variable. Inefficient against bacterial spores.

Uses

It is mainly used for: asepsis of intact skin during pre-surgical wash, of small wounds, burns, excoriations, rash, and/or mild mycosis athlete’s foot, etc.); of mild affections of the mucus of the mouth (aphthas, ulcer, small wounds, etc.) o of the vagina (mild irritation, mycosis, etc.); disinfection of surgical material during emergencies; disinfection of hospital rooms in general, surgical gowns, bed clothes, etc.
